Great White Sharks – a name that makes the heart beat a little faster – whenever you hear it mentioned. And hasn’t it been mentioned a lot over the festive period of 2014/2015.
Whether you are on the coast of Australia, New Zealand or South Africa – Shark appearances are becoming more and more common – with devastating results…for both shark and human.
There is no need to itemize out attacks across these 3 nations as emotions are running high and nothing is to be gained by that.
What is becoming an unhealthy fixation on the human part is the hunt down and cruel destruction of the “supposed ” killer or maimer by almost vigilante actions. Until the contents of the stomach of a shark can be analyzed there is no way to know that “said ” shark was responsible for “said” attack. Too late for the shark though by that stage.
There are all sorts of products out on the market now that can assist surfers/swimmers/water lovers to feel more comfortable out in the ocean and all from varying prices. One in particular that is proving popular is Sharkbanz – a device that is worn like a wrist watch which emits a magnetic wave – “the shark approaches a person wearing Sharkbanz, magnetic waves coming from the band disrupt its electro-receptors and it quickly turns away. The experience for the shark is, “like a person suddenly shining a very bright light in your eyes in a dark room, and its not pleasant”, according to Dr. Stroud. Once a shark comes near the band, it frequently leaves the area and does not return.” Dr Eric Stroud and Dr. Patrick Rice are two scientists who founded Shark Defense almost 15 years ago, and are now the leading researchers in shark repellent technology. www.sharkbanz.com.au
One important thing that we all need to remember whether we like it or not is the ocean is NOT our domain. It belongs to the sharks, along with many other predatory creatures. When we enter the ocean its on their terms, much like walking through the wild plains of Africa. Respect.
